New Delhi. Due to regular heavy rains of the southwest monsoon, there is a possibility of heavy damage to the crop in the major pigeon pea (tuvar) producing states of the country.
This also includes top producing states like Karnataka, Maharashtra, Telangana and Gujarat.
Karnataka and Maharashtra are the two most prominent tur producing states of the country and there has also been a good increase in its area.
But farmers fear that excessive rain will cause waterlogging in the fields. According to the President of the Karnataka Pradesh Red Gram Growers Association based in Kalaburagi,
the rain is still continuing in the major producing districts of the state, due to which the low-lying areas are flooded.
Due to this, there is a possibility of an outbreak of root rot pest, which can cause heavy damage to the tur crop.
The urad and moong crops have already been affected by excessive rains. Its crop was ready for harvesting in Kalaburagi district.
It is worth mentioning that heavy rains had occurred in the major tur producing areas of Karnataka, Maharashtra and Telangana last week.
249 percent more rain was recorded in Yadgir from 29 August to 4 September. Similarly, heavy rains occurred in the neighbouring districts of Maharashtra during the period under review.
Latur received 229 percent more rain and Nanded received 264 percent more rain than the normal average.
In Telangana too, Sangareddy district received 328 percent, Vikarabad received 326 percent and Nizamabad received 336 percent surplus rain.
The production area of pulses during Kharif period increased by 7.26 percent from 116.66 lakh hectares last year and reached 125.13 lakh hectares till 30 August this time.
Under this, especially the sowing area of tur jumped to 45.78 lakh hectares, which is 12.37 percent or 5.04 lakh hectares more than the area of 40.74 lakh hectares during the same period last year.
