New Delhi . Based on the recommendations of the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP), the Central Government is likely to take a decision soon regarding the Minimum Support Price (MSP) of Rabi crops. This time the farming community is confident of a good increase in the MSP of major Rabi crops like wheat, gram, lentils and mustard.
The government is encouraging the production of pulses and oilseeds so that dependence on imports can be reduced.
During the last season also, a good increase was made in the support price. Emphasis will be laid on increasing the production of wheat to ensure internal food security. The support price of other crops will also be increased.
It is worth noting that as compared to the 2022-23 season, the MSP of wheat for the Rabi season of 2023-24 was increased by 7 percent from Rs 2125 per quintal to Rs 2275 per quintal. This time, if it is increased by even Rs 125, it will reach Rs 2400 per quintal. However, in domestic markets, the price of wheat is much higher than the MSP.
Among pulse crops, the minimum support price of lentil was increased by Rs 425 or 7% from Rs 6000 per quintal to Rs 6425 per quintal, but this time there is a possibility of a lesser increase in it.
If there is an increase of even 2%, then it can reach Rs 6553 per quintal. In comparison, the support price of gram was increased by only 2% from Rs 5335 per quintal to Rs 5440 per quintal, while this time there is a possibility of a greater increase in it. Support price is not fixed for peas.
Among oilseed crops, the minimum support price of mustard was increased by Rs 200 or 4 per cent from Rs 5450 per quintal in the 2022-23 season to Rs 5650 per quintal in the Rabi season of 2023-24,
while it is also expected to increase by 4 per cent or more during the 2024-25 season. This can encourage farmers to increase production.
