Farmers Troubled by Falling Red Chili Prices
★ Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has convened a high-level meeting with senior officials on Friday to discuss the procurement of red chilies under the Centre’s Market Intervention Scheme (MIS). The meeting will also deliberate on an export strategy for red chilies.
★ This meeting is being held after Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister M. Chandrababu Naidu discussed the plight of red chili farmers in the state with Chouhan. Due to excessive production, red chili prices have dropped sharply.
★ According to an official statement, Chouhan informed the Chief Minister that the Centre’s MIS scheme is implemented when prices fall by more than 10% compared to the previous year. In response, Naidu stated that the price drop this year is far greater than 10%.
