New Delhi. The Union Agriculture Minister has released the first advance estimates of Kharif crop production for 2025-26. Foodgrain production is expected to increase by 38.70 lakh tonnes in the 2025-26 Kharif season compared to 2024-25, reaching 1733.30 lakh tonnes.

Under this, rice production is estimated to increase by 17.32 lakh tonnes to 1245.04 lakh tonnes, and maize production is estimated to jump by 34.95 lakh tonnes to reach 283.03 lakh tonnes. The total production of coarse or nutritious grains, including maize, is expected to be 414.14 lakh tonnes, and pulses production is expected to be 74.13 lakh tonnes.

In the pulses category, production of 35.97 lakh tons of pigeon pea (tuvar), 17.20 lakh tons of green gram (mung bean), and 12.05 lakh tons of black gram (urad) is estimated. Similarly, the total production of Kharif oilseed crops is estimated at 275.63 lakh tons, which primarily includes 142.66 lakh tons of soybean and 110.93 lakh tons of groundnut. This peanut production estimate is 6.81 lakh tons higher than the previous Kharif season.

Among cash or industrial crops, sugarcane production is estimated to increase by 210.03 lakh tons from the previous season to reach 4756.14 lakh tons this time, while cotton production is expected to decline to 292.15 lakh bales (each bale weighing 170 kg).

Acreage under rice and maize reached new record levels this year during the Kharif season, which was why increased production was already expected. But the industry and trade sector may not agree with the production estimates for pigeon pea and soybean.

This is only the first advance estimate, while three more will be released in the coming months, and the estimated production figures for various crops may be subject to change.
