Srinagar. With the improvement in law and order and transportation facilities in Jammu and Kashmir, the Food Corporation of India (FCI) has successfully sent its first consignment of food grains to Anantnag district via railway rake.

A goods train carrying approximately 1384 tons of rice in 81 wagons arrived there on December 21, and arrangements are now being made for its safe storage.

It will be supplied to beneficiaries through the Public Distribution System (PDS). A buffer stock of rice is being created there for this purpose.

This is the first time that a goods train loaded with Food Corporation of India food grains has reached this part of Kashmir directly.

This is considered a significant achievement as it will initiate the regular arrival of rice and wheat consignments in Anantnag and surrounding districts in the future, and will ensure the creation of a buffer stock of food grains and timely distribution.

It is noteworthy that until now, food grains were transported to various districts of the Kashmir Valley by trucks via road, which resulted in high transportation costs.

Sending goods by rail will reduce transportation costs and help the Food Corporation save money. The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway already experiences heavy traffic.

The reduction in truck movement will also ease this congestion, providing relief to the general public.
