News Capsule: Malaysia raises May CPO reference price, export duty at 10%
★ Malaysia has increased the reference price of crude palm oil (CPO) for May 2026 to RM 4,521.89 per tonne. Following this revision, the export duty has been raised to 10%, which is the maximum level under its tax structure.
★ In April 2026, the CPO reference price stood at RM 3,935.19 per tonne, attracting a duty of 9.5%. With May prices crossing the RM 4,050 per tonne threshold, the duty has now moved to the highest slab.
★ Under Malaysia’s export tax structure, the duty starts at 3% when prices are in the RM 2,250–2,400 per tonne range and gradually increases with higher price slabs, capping at 10%.
★ The higher duty may weigh on the global competitiveness of Malaysian palm oil. It could also raise import costs for major buyers like India, potentially exerting upward pressure on the domestic edible oil market.
