News Capsule: India’s sugar exports seen at 7.5–8 lakh tonnes in 2025-26
★ India’s sugar exports for the 2025-26 marketing season (October–September) are expected to be limited to 7.5–8 lakh tonnes, as weak global price parity continues to make exports unattractive, preventing mills from fully utilising the quota.
★ The government had initially allowed 15 lakh tonnes of exports, later opening an additional 5 lakh tonnes quota. However, only 87,587 tonnes have been approved from this additional pool so far. By March 3, around 5 lakh tonnes had already been exported.
★ Domestic demand stagnation has also restricted exportable surplus. Sugar production has reached about 275 lakh tonnes so far this season, with total output estimated at 282 lakh tonnes, slightly higher than 261 lakh tonnes last year.
