Fluctuations in International Market for Desi Chana; Slight Recovery Seen by March 2025
★ The international prices of desi chana (chickpeas) have seen significant fluctuations over the past year. In May 2024, prices ranged between USD 750–870 per ton. Prices peaked between July and September, followed by a continuous downward trend.
★ In July 2024, prices for chana from Australia to Nepal reached USD 940/ton, while shipments from Australia to India and Bangladesh were priced around USD 910/ton. In September, another surge pushed the price for Australia to Nepal exports to USD 960/ton—the highest level during the season.
★ After this peak, a steady decline began. By November 2024, import prices from most origins had fallen to the range of USD 720–740 per ton. The downward trend continued into January 2025, with prices falling further to USD 670/ton.
★ In January–February 2025, the market showed some signs of stabilization. Prices for chana from Russia to Pakistan and from Tanzania to India hovered around USD 700/ton. By March 2025, prices for shipments from Australia to Nepal and Bangladesh saw a modest rebound to around USD 745/ton.
★ During the previous financial year, India imported approximately 1.313 million tons of desi chana, while imports of yellow peas (matar) also continued.
★ For this year, trade estimates suggest desi chana production (excluding kabuli chana and seed varieties) could reach 7.5–8 million tons.
★ With low government stock and expectations of reduced future imports, the market is likely to operate based on real demand and supply, which could lend support to prices.
