Food Grain Stock Status in India
★ India has ample food grain reserves.
★ As of April 27, 2025, the country has 66.17 million tonnes of wheat and rice in stock.
★ In comparison, 52 million tonnes were distributed through the Public Distribution System (PDS) in the previous year.
★ This means the country has more than a year’s supply of foodgrains available.

Sugar
★ As of May 1, 2025, sugar production is down by 18% compared to the previous year.
★ However, India has a starting stock of 5.4 million tonnes, which is more than two months' worth of consumption.
★ No supply issues are expected until the new crop arrives in October.

Pulses
★ As of April 1, 2025, the government has 1.8 million tonnes of pulses in stock, which is below the buffer norm of 3.5 million tonnes.
★ The highest quantities in stock are of tur (pigeon pea), masoor (lentil), and moong (green gram).
★ With the new chana (gram) crop already in the market and a good stock of yellow peas, the supply of pulses is expected to remain steady.

Edible Oil
★ The country currently has 1.6 to 1.7 million tonnes of edible oil, which is enough for 20 to 25 days of consumption.
★ Stocks are slightly lower than usual due to reduced imports in recent months.
★ Normally, India maintains a one-month buffer stock of edible oil.
★ Based on this data, India has sufficient reserves of foodgrains, sugar, pulses, and edible oil. Even if a war-like situation arises, there is no risk of food security.
