London. The International Grains Council (IGC) has raised its global grain production forecast for the 2025-26 marketing season by 13 million tons to 2.42 billion tons. This includes significant increases in production estimates, particularly for wheat and barley.
In the IGC's new monthly report, the global grain outstanding stock estimate has also been increased by 12 million tons to 618 million tons. Stocks are expected to rise in major exporting countries.
Furthermore, the global grain trade estimate has also been revised upward to 440 million tons, including robust wheat shipments.
Global wheat production is projected to reach 827 million tons in 2025-26. This indicates increased production, particularly in exporting countries such as Russia, the United States, Ukraine, Argentina, the European Union, and Kazakhstan.
As a result, the outstanding surplus stock of wheat is estimated to increase to 275 million tons. Global wheat consumption is expected to reach 820 million tons in 2025-26. Similarly, the total global consumption of food grains is estimated to reach 240 billion tons.
Global maize production is estimated to be 130 billion tons, and consumption is estimated to be 129 billion tons. On the other hand, global rice production has been reduced by 2 million tons to 542 million tons, which is 2 million tons more than the total potential global consumption of 540 million tons.
Production and consumption in India are expected to increase. It is noteworthy that India is the largest exporter of rice and the second largest producer after China. Other rice exporting countries include Thailand, Vietnam, and Pakistan.
