Global Lentil Market Analysis – January 2025
Canada – Lentil Production:
★ Canada’s lentil production decreased by 162,000 tons, reaching 2.43 million tons, which is 35% higher than 2023 (1.8 million tons), but still significantly lower than 2020’s 2.9 million tons.
★ The total lentil supply (production + stocks) increased by 33%, reaching 2.7 million tons, the highest since 2020/21.
★ Lentil supply by variety:
Large/medium-sized lentils: 553,000 tons (up from 460,000 tons last year).
Small green lentils: 239,000 tons (up from 163,000 tons last year).
Red lentils: 1.8 million tons (up from 1.3 million tons last year).

Global Lentil Production:
★ Global lentil production from major producing countries is expected to reach 6.6 million tons, a 15% increase from last year’s 5.7 million tons.

Exports and Demand:
★ From August to October 2024, Canada exported 581,000 tons of lentils, a 21% increase (100,000 tons more) compared to last year.
★ Total global consumption in 2024 is estimated to reach 6.7 million tons.

Future Outlook:
★ Canada’s total lentil export demand for 2024/25 may be around 2 million tons, up from 1.65 million tons last year.
★ Ending stocks are expected to be 380,000 tons.
★ In 2025, lentil planting in Canada, Australia, and Russia is likely to increase.
