Hyderabad. Following the resolution of the impasse between the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI), an agency under the Union Ministry of Textiles, and ginning mills in Telangana, South India's leading cotton-producing state, the government has decided to begin government procurement of cotton from farmers at the Minimum Support Price (MSP) from October 22, 2025.
A senior official from the Telangana Agriculture Department stated that the CCI and ginning mills will complete the tender process by October 19 and notify procurement centers.
The cooperative agency is expected to procure approximately 2.4 million tons of cotton in Telangana during the current marketing season. Cotton arrivals have already begun in the state.
It is noteworthy that due to some unresolved issues with the CCI, cotton procurement from farmers in Telangana could not begin on time this year.
Ginning mills, on behalf of a government agency, purchase cotton and pack it in villages, following a specific process. However, this year, ginning units in Telangana, and especially in Warangal district, generally did not participate in the tender issued by the government agency for cotton procurement due to concerns about new regulatory rules implemented by the corporation.
The agency's rules regarding the percentage of pure cotton produced after ginning, including cottonseed, were considered too strict. Furthermore, the rules for allocating bids, booking slots, and mapping areas were also unfavorable for ginners.
According to official sources, the matter has now been resolved, and approximately 330 ginning mills are expected to begin cotton procurement.
In addition to Warangal, Telangana, cotton is cultivated extensively in districts such as Adilabad, Khammam, Nalgonda, Sangareddy, and Kurnool.
The resumption of government procurement will provide significant relief to cotton producers there. The Central Government has increased the cotton minimum support price for the current marketing season of 2025-26 by 8.3 percent to Rs 7710 per quintal for the medium staple category and by 7.8 percent to Rs 8110 per quintal for the long staple varieties as compared to 2024-25.
