Huge drop in gram exports from Australia

Brisbane. Although there was a good increase in the export of gram from Australia during the month of August as compared to July, the export performance was very weak compared to the whole season. According to the latest data from the government body-Australian Bureau of Statistics, 13,234 tonnes of gram was exported from the country in July, which jumped 35 percent to 17,884 tonnes in August. After this, Pakistan imported 2199 tonnes and Nepal imported 1966 tonnes of gram.
But compared to the 2022-23 season, in the marketing season of 2023-24, a total of 5,59,968 tonnes of gram was exported from Australia till August 2023, which decreased to 3,94,652 tonnes in the same period of the 2023-24 season. The off-season of gram supply is going on there.
As far as lentils are concerned, its export is also lagging far behind the previous season. In July 2024, 1,21,400 tonnes of lentils were exported from Australia, which fell by 43 percent to 69,330 tonnes in August. Like gram, India also led the way in lentil imports, which imported 36,143 tonnes from Australia in August. After this, Sri Lanka imported 14,146 tonnes and Pakistan imported 7098 tonnes of gram. According to the report of the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), in the marketing season of 2022-23, the total export of lentils from Australia had increased to 14,98,183 tonnes till August 2023, which decreased by about 2 lakh tonnes to 12,98,389 tonnes in the same period of the marketing season of 2023-24. The harvesting of gram and lentil crops is going to start soon in Australia, but the crop is expected to suffer a lot due to bad weather in September.
