The Indonesian government has shown support for increasing the export levy on palm oil in recent months. The export levy was raised in September 2023, as part of efforts to manage domestic supply and prices, and to support the biodiesel industry. However, after this increase, there were no further changes in the policy, with the government signaling that there would be no additional hikes in the levy in the near future.
Instead, the focus appears to be on promoting greater domestic use of palm oil, especially for biodiesel production. Indonesia, being one of the world’s largest palm oil producers, has been expanding its palm oil-based biodiesel program in an effort to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels, create local demand for palm oil, and support the domestic palm oil industry. The government is aiming to increase the use of palm oil in biodiesel, which is expected to both stabilize the domestic market and reduce export dependency.
The decision to avoid further export levy hikes while increasing the domestic use of palm oil for biodiesel reflects a broader strategy to balance economic, environmental, and social goals in Indonesia's palm oil sector.
