Improved Trading for Select Lentil Varieties in Canada

Saskatoon. During the current week, trading for select varieties of lentils has witnessed an uptick in markets across Western Canada—particularly in the province of Saskatchewan—consequently keeping prices firm.
The spot price for red lentils has reached 25 cents per pound on an "Free on Board" (FOB) farm basis, touching 25–26 cents per pound in some locations. The contract price for the upcoming new crop (expected to arrive starting in August) is also reported to be 24 cents per pound.
Trading for small green lentils is generally taking place at a price level of 19 cents per pound, although in the central region of Saskatchewan, bids are being quoted at 20 cents per pound. However, the contract price for the next crop of small green lentils has already climbed to 22 cents.
Canada currently holds substantial stocks of lentils, even as sowing for the next crop has already commenced. Producers, however, remain somewhat uncertain regarding their sowing decisions.
This hesitation stems from the fact that the price of green lentils has recently fallen below that of red lentils—a reversal of the usual trend, wherein green lentils typically command a significantly higher price premium.
The price for large green lentils is currently reported to be between 23 and 24 cents per pound. A clearer picture regarding the extent of lentil sowing is expected to emerge by the end of next month.
