Rajasthan leads in moong sowing
★ Rajasthan has recorded the highest area under moong cultivation this year, with 2.323 million hectares sown, compared to 2.167 million hectares last year — a rise of 0.156 million hectares.
~~~~~~
Why is moong sowing increasing specifically in Rajasthan?
★ Moong has a short crop duration, allowing farmers to prepare for the next crop quickly.
★ Farmers currently have limited alternative crop options, making moong the preferred choice.
★ Immediately after moong harvest, mustard sowing begins — and Rajasthan is the leading mustard-producing state in India.
★ A recent surge in mustard prices has further encouraged farmers to opt for moong.
★ The possibility of government procurement and restrictions on imports have also contributed to the increase in moong sowing.
Status of other major states:
★ Gujarat: 0.44 million hectares (up by 0.01 from last year)
★ Karnataka: 4.14 million hectares (down by 0.15)
★ Maharashtra: 2.07 million hectares (down by 0.19)
★ Telangana: 0.52 million hectares (down by 0.09)
★ Total sowing in five states
★ These five states together account for 3.04 million hectares under moong cultivation, compared to 2.926 million hectares last year — an increase of 0.114 million hectares.
★ A good kharif moong production is expected this year.
