Sydney. The Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), which was previously in a negative phase, has now shifted to a neutral phase. This means the IOD is currently neither in a positive nor a negative phase. Meanwhile, the La Niña weather pattern remains active.
According to the Australian Bureau of Meteorology's fortnightly report, the La Niña weather pattern persists over the tropical Pacific Ocean, and temperatures there are expected to remain favorable for it until the early months of next year (2026).
The bureau's report indicates that the IOD is likely to remain neutral until the autumn season of 2026.
It's worth noting that in the Southern Hemisphere, autumn runs from March to May. Australia, Brazil, and Argentina are all countries in the Southern Hemisphere.
According to the bureau, the Indian Ocean Dipole is usually neutral or inactive from December to April, resulting in relatively less rainfall in the neighboring countries of the Northern Hemisphere.
However, with La Niña being active this time, good rainfall can be expected. In India, pre-monsoon rains occur during March to May, which particularly benefits the Zaid (summer) crops. Sometimes, it can also affect the harvesting and preparation of Rabi (winter) crops.
