Indonesia retains top position in supplying edible oils to India

Mumbai. Like previous years, Indonesia remained the most prominent country supplying edible oils to India in the current marketing season of 2023-24. It was followed by Malaysia, Argentina and Russia.
According to the data received, during the first 11 months (November-2023-September 2024) of the marketing season 2023-24, India imported 44.08 lakh tonnes of edible oil from Indonesia, 28.89 lakh tonnes from Malaysia, 22.82 lakh tonnes from Argentina and 18.12 lakh tonnes from Russia.
Apart from this, during the period under review, 9.12 lakh tonnes of edible oil was imported from Brazil, 7.16 lakh tonnes from Thailand, 6.38 lakh tonnes from Romania, 5 lakh tonnes from Ukraine and 3.78 lakh tonnes from other countries.
It is noteworthy that India mainly imports crude palm oil (CPO), RBD palmolein crude palm kernel oil (CPKO) from Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand, while a limited quantity of soybean oil is also imported from Thailand. Similarly, soybean oil and sunflower oil are imported from Argentina, Brazil, Russia, Romania and Ukraine.
During the 11 months from November 2023 to September 2024, a total of 145.36 lakh tonnes of edible oils were imported from India including 16.95 lakh tonnes of RBD palmolein, 63.73 lakh tonnes of crude palm oil, 1.02 lakh tonnes of crude palm kernel oil,
30.99 lakh tonnes of crude degummed soybean oil and 32.67 lakh tonnes of crude sunflower oil. During this period, 29.77 lakh tonnes of CPO and 14.27 lakh tonnes of RBD palmolein were imported from Indonesia. 2.64 lakh tonnes of palmolein and 25.52 lakh tonnes of CPO were imported from Malaysia. Thailand exported 6.68 lakh tonnes of CPO to India.
