Information on the Sugar Industry provided by the Ministry of Food and Public Distribution
★ During the sugar season 2024–25, a total of 534 sugar mills were operational in the country. Average annual sugarcane production increased to about 4,500–5,000 lakh metric tonnes (LMT), out of which around 260–300 LMT was used for sugar production, while about 30–40 LMT of sugar was diverted for ethanol production.
★ Nearly 99.9% of sugarcane dues payable to farmers from earlier sugar seasons have been cleared. For the previous sugar season 2024–25 (October–September), against total cane dues of ₹1,02,687 crore, payments of approximately ₹1,00,501 crore have been made, with only ₹2,186 crore remaining outstanding. Thus, about 98% of cane dues have been paid to farmers.
★ To promote ease of doing business, enhance transparency, and bring all relevant data related to sugar mills and the ethanol industry onto a single platform, a dedicated module has been developed on the National Single Window System (NSWS). Monthly information has also been digitized, and around 535 sugar mills are regularly submitting this data on a monthly basis.
