The EIA data released this morning showed a sharp surge in ethanol production. On a week-on-week basis, production jumped by 98,000 barrels per day, or 8.92%, reaching a record 1.196 million barrels per day, which is also 5.75% above the previous record.
Ethanol stocks rose by 821,000 barrels to a total of 24.473 million barrels. The increase was mainly seen in the Gulf region (+423,000 barrels) and the East Coast (+616,000 barrels), which is being viewed as possible preparation for exports.
Ethanol exports increased by 6,000 barrels per day to 119,000 barrels per day, while refiner inputs for ethanol rose by 70,000 barrels per day to 841,000 barrels per day.
Overnight, several South Korean importers purchased a total of 402,000 metric tons of corn through tenders. USDA confirmed that part of this buying was from the US, announcing a private export sale of 136,000 metric tons of corn to South Korea.
USDA’s Export Sales report will be released on Thursday morning. Traders are expecting corn sales of 0.6 to 1.4 million metric tons for the week ending January 8.
Meanwhile, the Rosario Grains Exchange has raised its estimate of Argentina’s corn production to 62 million metric tons, up 1 million tons from the previous estimate.
