Karachi. The local administration of Karachi, Pakistan's most prominent commercial port city, has announced that the new wholesale price of sugar has been fixed at Rs 140 per kg and the retail price at Rs 143 per kg. An official notification confirming these rates has also been issued.

The Pakistani rupee has already depreciated significantly, making goods considerably more expensive there than in India.

The new guidelines issued by the Karachi Commissioner's office state that this newly announced price for sugar has come into effect immediately and will remain in force until further notice.

The guidelines emphasize that no trader or business firm will be allowed to sell sugar at a price higher than this fixed rate. Strict legal action will be taken against anyone found guilty of violating this rule.

The Commissioner has directed all wholesale and retail traders to immediately display this new price of sugar on their price lists at their shops and outlets to ensure complete compliance with the government order.

It is noteworthy that a few days ago, the Chairman of the Wholesale Grocers Association had said that the price of sugar in the wholesale market had decreased by Rs 6 per kg, which would give retail traders and consumers the opportunity to buy it at a lower price.

At that time, the price of sugar in Karachi's wholesale market was Rs 146 per kg, and the ex-factory price was Rs 142 per kg.

The new season for sugarcane crushing and sugar production in Sindh province began on December 1, 2025, and due to improved supply and availability, prices have softened considerably.

A few months ago, the price of sugar had surged to Rs 200 per kg. However, its retail price is still hovering around Rs 170-180 per kg.
