Karnataka to Extend Full Support to Maize Farmers

Mysore. In the northern part of Karnataka, a leading maize-producing state in the country, the wholesale market price of this important coarse grain has fallen significantly.
Concerned and distressed farmers have resorted to protests. They demand that maize be purchased at least at the Minimum Support Price (MSP), which this year is set at ₹2,400 per quintal.
The provincial government agrees with the farmers' demands and has initiated vigorous efforts to ensure better returns for producers.
The Karnataka government has decided to hold talks with the state's major distillers and poultry industry to persuade them to purchase maize from farmers at a good price.
The Chief Minister of Karnataka has stated that a meeting will soon be held with all the state's major distillers, in which they will be directed to purchase maize as soon as possible for ethanol production.
Additionally, discussions will be held with the state's poultry industry on this issue. It is worth noting that the poultry industry in Karnataka typically purchases large quantities of maize.
According to the Chief Minister, the state government will provide all possible support and assistance to farmers affected by the drop in maize prices.
Since domestic maize production has been substantial, a letter will be sent to the central government requesting restrictions on its imports.
Due to weak demand and excellent production, the domestic market price of maize has fallen well below the MSP.
The situation is worse in northern Karnataka. Farmers there have abundant stocks of maize, but the lack of buyers has led to a significant drop in prices.
According to the government portal Agmark Net, the average maize price recorded so far in November was ₹1814 per quintal, down 6 percent from October and 17 percent compared to November 2024.
The Chief Minister stated that the quota of maize-based ethanol issued to distillers in Karnataka is an import quota, and therefore, distillers are showing little interest in purchasing it.
