Patna. Due to continuous heavy rainfall and water being released into the rivers from Nepal, severe floods are being witnessed in about two dozen districts of northern and central Bihar.
Rivers like Kosi, Gandak and Bagmati are in spate and at least seven dams have either broken or cracked. Barrages of Balmiki Nagar and Birpur have been opened due to which a large area has been flooded and fields have been submerged.
The districts of Bihar where the most horrific outbreak of floods and rains is being witnessed include Saharsa, Supaul, Darbhanga, Madhubani, Shivhar, Sitamarhi, Muzaffarpur, Motihari, Bettiah and Gopalganj etc.
Apart from this, water life has been disrupted in many other districts due to heavy rains and destructive floods.
The interesting fact is that in the current monsoon season, till mid-September, Bihar had received 28% less rain than the normal average,
but in the third-fourth week of September, it rained so heavily that all the farms and barns were submerged and along with paddy and maize, pulses and oilseeds crops were also submerged.
According to agricultural experts, if the flood-rain water remains in the fields for a long time, then Kharif crops may suffer heavy damage and its production may decrease significantly.
Small farmers and agricultural labourers are having to take shelter in high and safe places, due to which it has become difficult to take care of the crops.
During the last five-six days, most of the districts of Bihar have received much more rain than required, but the real problem is coming from Nepal.
The situation there is even more terrible. It may take a long time to assess the damage to the crops in Bihar.
