Kharif pulses production projected to fall by 3.20 lakh tonnes

New Delhi. Despite the total sown area being slightly higher than last year, the Union Agriculture Ministry has projected the pulses production to decline to 74.13 lakh tonnes during the current Kharif season of 2025-26, which is 3.20 lakh tonnes less than the 2024-25 Kharif production of 77.33 lakh tonnes.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture's first advance estimate, during the 2025-26 Kharif season, pigeon pea (tuvar) production is expected to decline by 27,000 tonnes from 36.24 lakh tonnes to 35.97 lakh tonnes, black gram (urad) production is expected to decline by 1.36 lakh tonnes from 134.1 million tonnes to 12.05 lakh tonnes, and green gram production is expected to decline by 54,000 tonnes from 17.74 lakh tonnes to 17.20 lakh tonnes.
Interestingly, during the period under review, there was a significant increase in the area under urad and the area under pigeon pea (tuvar) was also slightly increased, while the area under green gram remained almost the same.
However, a decline in the production of these major pulses is still feared. The main reasons for this are said to be surplus rainfall during the southwest monsoon in important producing areas, severe floods in some areas, and prolonged waterlogging in fields.
The industry and trade sector may be skeptical of this government production estimate for tur (tur), as the crop has suffered significant damage due to natural disasters in major producing states like Maharashtra and Karnataka.
Consequently, tur production is expected to decline to between 2.9-3.2 million tons. Mung and urad crops have also suffered significant damage. New arrivals of these two pulses have already begun, while tur (tur) arrivals are expected to begin next month.
