Lentil market in Canada subdued due to low buyer interest

Saskatoon. Harvesting of the lentil crop is underway in Canada, but most trading is currently limited to old stocks. There is little market activity, and prices remain largely stable. Due to low market rates, producers are selling limited quantities and holding onto their stocks, anticipating a rise in lentil prices in the near future. Buyers, too, are showing no particular urgency.

Information regarding the average yield and quality of the new crop is currently scarce. Early trends indicate significant variations in yield levels—differences are being observed not only across different regions but even within different sections of the same farm. Based on information received so far, lentil yields in Saskatchewan province are likely to remain slightly below the normal average.

The current FOB farm-gate prices are reported at 23 cents per pound for No. 2 quality large green lentils, 16–19 cents per pound for small green lentils, and 23.5 cents per pound for red lentils. The price of old-stock large green lentils has fallen to 1 cent per pound below that of the new crop. This season, Canada will face stiff competition from Australia in the red lentil export market.
