News Capsule: Monthly sugar sales quota of 2.2 million tonnes allocated for January 2026
★ The Ministry of Food has allocated a monthly sugar sales quota of 2.2 million tonnes for January 2026. This is 0.05 million tonnes lower than January 2025 and the same as December 2025.
★ For reference, total sugar sales quotas were 27.2 million tonnes in 2025, 28.5 million tonnes in 2024, and 28.7 million tonnes in 2023.
★ The quota has been reduced each year in line with declining production, although a good improvement in production has been seen this year.
★ Approval has been granted for the export of 1.5 million tonnes of sugar, but the international market remains weak.
★ Ethanol support is no longer available to sugar mills, cane arrears to farmers are increasing, and the sugar industry is facing major challenges.
★ Mills have demanded an increase in MSP and higher ethanol prices. If pressure intensifies further, the government may have to make changes in both.
