More than 90 percent of lentil quality in Canada is better than average

Winnipeg . Harvesting and preparation of lentil crop has been completed in Canada and more than 90 percent of the stock is said to be better than average.
Due to dry weather in July, the late sown crop was affected due to which a difference in the yield was seen. According to the available data, the lentil sowing area in Canada has increased from 37 lakh acres last year to 42 lakh acres this time.
Under this, the production area of red lentil increased from 23 lakh acres to 25.60 lakh acres, the area of thick green lentil increased from 9 lakh acres to 10.50 lakh acres and the area of small green lentil improved from 3.70 lakh acres to 4.70 lakh acres. In the initial phase, sowing increased due to good weather conditions.
Government agency Stats Can has estimated the production of 27.70 lakh tons of lentils in Canada during the 2024-25 season in its model-based report, while the industry-business sector has expressed the possibility of its actual production being between 23.80 to 25.60 lakh tons,
which is more than the 2023-24 season production of 16.50 lakh tons and the five-year average production of 22 lakh tons. During the current year, compared to last year, the production of red lentils in Canada has jumped from 12 lakh tons to 16 lakh tons,
the production of thick green lentils has increased from 3.21 lakh tons to about 5 lakh tons, the production of small green lentils is expected to improve to 3.50 lakh tons and the production of other varieties is expected to reach 50 thousand tons.
A leading analyst has estimated the total production of lentils in Canada to be around 25 lakh tons this time.
At the beginning of the current marketing season, there was a backlog of about 1.80 lakh tonnes of lentils in Canada, which had a higher amount of red lentils. Farmers were left with a stock of about 30 thousand tonnes.
Lentil exports from Canada increased to 1.24 lakh tonnes in July and India was its major buyer. During the entire marketing season of 2023-24 (August-July),
about 16.50 lakh tonnes of lentils were exported from Canada, while in 2024-25, exports are expected to increase to 19 lakh tonnes as this time the stock has increased due to increased production.
