Yangon. Pigeon pea (tuvar) production in Myanmar, India's northeastern neighbor, is projected to reach 400,000 tons or more by the 2025-26 season. A leading exporting firm estimates that approximately 350,000-360,000 tons of tuvar (pigeon pea) were produced in Myanmar during the 2024-25 season, with a further increase of 50,000-60,000 tons in the 2025-26 season.
This increase could have been even higher, but low market prices for the past six months have dampened the expected enthusiasm among farmers.
Tur (pigeon pea) sowing is expected to see a limited increase, and if weather conditions remain favorable, its average yield rate could increase significantly. In fact, the average export offer price of tur (tur) in African countries like Tanzania,
Mozambique, Malawi, and Sudan is approximately $200 per tonne lower than in Myanmar, prompting India to increase imports from there.
Despite this, there remains a strong demand for tur (tur) from Myanmar in India. According to exporting firms, approximately 330,000 tonnes of tur were exported from Myanmar to India during the first 10 months of 2025 (January-October), with a monthly average of 33,000 tonnes.
The Indian government recently announced a significant purchase of tur (tur) at the Minimum Support Price (MSP).
This MSP has been set at a very high level of ₹8,000 per quintal. Therefore, India is expected to continue to import tur at low prices from Myanmar and other African countries.
Myanmar is fully prepared for this. In any case, India's pigeon pea production is expected to decline to 3-3.2 million tons during the 2025-26 season, increasing dependence on imports. Sowing of pulse crops has already begun in Myanmar.
