Biratnagar. Two government agencies of Nepal have reduced the import of subsidized sugar from India and have purchased only 5650 tons. It believes that this import of sugar will prove sufficient to meet the demand of the festive season. It is worth mentioning that the Nepal government had given permission to two companies- Salt Trading Corporation and Food Management and Trading Company to import 15-15 thousand tons, i.e. 30 thousand tons in total. This sugar was to be imported under the agreement of the Nepal government with the Government of India. There is no import-export duty on this sugar. The Nepal government had decided to import sugar in large quantities from India as it feared a shortage of sugar during the festive season. Although both the companies have not given any concrete or clear reason for importing less quantity of sugar, but they have definitely said that the quantity of sugar imported is sufficient to meet the domestic demand. There is adequate stock of sugar in Nepal market and its prices are also stable.

In fact, experts say that a large quantity of sugar has already reached Nepal through smuggling from India, so there is no problem of its supply and availability there and the common consumers are not showing any hurry or panic in its purchase. One company has said that a contract has been made to import 5500 tons of sugar from India and it is being ensured that its stock reaches the Phulmati center of Nepal by 10 October. Good quality sugar is being ordered. Its price will be decided later in the domestic sector. The other company has contracted to import a limited quantity of sugar.
