News Capsule: Canada Chickpea Exports Reach Record Levels, But Prices May Remain Under Pressure in 2026-27
★ Canadian chickpea exports are expected to reach a record 240,000 tonnes in 2025-26, supported by strong demand from Pakistan, the United States, and the European Union. However, large carry-out stocks are expected to weigh on prices, with average chickpea values forecast to decline from the previous year.
★ For 2026-27, chickpea acreage in Canada is expected to increase by 6%, encouraged by competitive returns and strong export demand. Saskatchewan will continue to account for the majority of the chickpea-growing area, with the remainder located in Alberta.
★ Production is forecast to decline to 340,000 tonnes as yields return to average levels. Despite lower production, total supplies are expected to increase because of large carry-in stocks. Exports are projected to ease slightly, while carry-out stocks are expected to rise for a fourth consecutive year.
★ Higher global supplies and growing inventories are likely to keep chickpea prices under pressure during 2026-27. Meanwhile, US chickpea acreage is forecast to decline by 7%, with production expected to fall 6% to 290,000 tonnes. However, the United States is expected to continue expanding its market share in key destinations such as the European Union and Pakistan.
