News Capsule: Canada Lentil Exports Remain Strong, But Production Seen Falling 30% in 2026-27
★ Canada’s lentil exports are projected to rise to 2.3 million tonnes (Mt) in 2025-26, with India, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates remaining the key export destinations. However, record carry-out stocks are expected to keep average lentil prices below the levels seen in the previous year.
★ For 2026-27, Canadian lentil acreage is forecast to decline by 6% to 1.67 million hectares, mainly due to weaker returns from green lentils during the 2025-26 crop year. Saskatchewan is expected to account for about 88% of the total lentil area, with the remainder located in Alberta and Manitoba.
★ As a result of the lower seeded area, lentil production is forecast to fall sharply by 30% to 2.35 Mt. Despite the decline in output, total supplies are expected to decrease only marginally because of record-high opening stocks. Exports are projected to remain steady at 2.3 Mt, while carry-out stocks are expected to decline to 1.24 Mt.
★ With global supplies tightening and inventories falling, average lentil prices are expected to recover in 2026-27, particularly for higher-quality grades. Meanwhile, US lentil acreage is forecast to decline by 22%, with production expected to fall to 375,000 tonnes. The reduction in US output could provide additional support to global lentil prices.
