News Capsule: Canada Exports Peas and Lentils to India Last Week
★ Last week, three vessels were dispatched from Canada to India, carrying 1,57,507 tonnes of peas and 46,375 tonnes of lentils.
★ This year, both Canada and Russia have reported abundant pea production, while Canada and Australia have also recorded good lentil output.
★ In the pea market, Canada faces competition from Russia, and in the lentil market, from Australia.
International prices are at multi-year lows.
★ If imports continue to rise, India’s stock of imported peas and lentils could increase further.
★ Over the past three months, a decline in imports reduced port stocks of all pulses, and festive demand caused a slight price increase.
★ If prices of chickpeas, peas, and lentils remain low during sowing, farmers may shift their focus to other crops.
★ To boost pulse production, significant policy measures or incentives are needed; otherwise, both farmers and the entire pulse industry may face increasing challenges.
