News Capsule: Cashew consumption is expected to double in the next two decades.
★ According to the AICA President, rising domestic demand means India will need to increase its processing capacity from the current 2 million tonnes to at least 4 million tonnes.
★ Global cashew production is also projected to rise from the current 6 million tonnes to 15 million tonnes by 2045.
★ Countries like Africa and Cambodia may expand production faster due to lower land costs, but single-origin processing carries higher risks such as raw nut deterioration, high interest costs, and price volatility.
★ India and Vietnam have an advantage because they can source raw cashew nuts from multiple origins, which reduces risk. They also benefit from a developed domestic market, skilled labour, and better systems for utilizing by-products.
