News Capsule: China Emerges as a Major Supplier of Crude Soybean Oil to India
★ India's edible oil import landscape is undergoing a significant shift, with China emerging as the country's third-largest supplier of crude soybean oil in 2025-26. Argentina, Brazil, and China now account for 93.3% of India's total crude soybean oil imports, making the country's import dependence increasingly concentrated among a few suppliers.
★ Argentina remains India's largest supplier with a 63.4% share, up from 60.2% a year earlier, while Brazil ranks second. China has rapidly expanded its presence, with its share rising to 8.1%. Just four years ago, imports from China were negligible, but it has now replaced smaller suppliers such as Russia, the United States, and Thailand.
★ The growing dependence on a limited number of supplier countries could increase supply risks for India. Any weather-related disruption, production decline, export restrictions, or geopolitical tensions in these key exporting nations could directly impact India's edible oil imports and domestic prices.
★ At the same time, rising global edible oil prices, the threat of lower palm oil production due to El Niño, and the weakening Indian rupee are expected to increase India's edible oil import bill. Industry experts believe that diversifying import sources while boosting domestic oilseed production will be essential to strengthen the country's long-term edible oil security.
