News Capsule: Cotton Procurement on increase
★ Cotton procurement by the CCI has picked up sharply as market arrivals rise. Daily purchases have crossed 1 lakh bales (170 kg each), and total procurement so far has reached around 8 lakh bales.
★ Market prices in mandis are hovering between ₹6,500 and ₹7,500 per quintal, well below the MSP of ₹8,100, which is why CCI’s total purchases this season are expected to exceed last year’s levels.
★ Unseasonal and excess rains have significantly affected cotton quality this year. The crop estimate is 305 lakh bales, about 2% lower than last year’s 312.40 lakh bales.
★ Good-quality cotton is becoming scarce, widening the price gap between high- and low-quality produce.
★ Stocking good-quality cotton at current levels does not seem risky for now.
