News Capsule: Dry Fruit Containers Seized at Port
★ A vessel has been detained at Mumbai’s Nhava Sheva Port carrying around 309 containers of dry fruits that originated from Bandar Abbas Port in Iran.
★ The consignment, particularly walnuts, was allegedly declared as being of Afghan origin to claim zero import duty benefits under the SAFTA agreement.
★ Investigations revealed that the goods were not of Afghan origin and that forged transit documents had been prepared to support the false claim.
★ So far, duty evasion amounting to approximately ₹50 crore has been uncovered.
★ The Customs Department has directed officials to exercise heightened vigilance in such cases.
