Hisar: Cotton farmers forced to sell at lower prices
★ After bajra and other Kharif crops, cotton farmers are now being forced to sell their produce below the Minimum Support Price (MSP). Traders are citing poor quality of the crop, while the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) has yet to begin procurement.
★ Recent heavy rains have caused extensive damage to crops. Whatever little produce farmers have left is not being purchased by government agencies, leaving them with no option but to sell to private traders at distress prices.
★ In Hisar and nearby areas, private traders are offering around ₹6,000 per quintal, whereas the Central Government has fixed the MSP at ₹7,860 per quintal for 27 mm cotton and ₹8,910 per quintal for 28 mm quality.
★ This year, around 3.80 lakh hectares in Haryana are under cotton cultivation, but heavy rains in September and October have severely damaged the crop, affecting both yield and quality.
