★ India’s consumption of dry fruits is steadily increasing, while domestic production has remained almost stagnant, leading to a growing dependence on imports.
★ Consumption of pistachios, which are almost entirely imported, has risen from 9,000 tonnes to 40,000 tonnes per year over the past five years. Similarly, walnut consumption has increased fivefold in the last eight years to reach 90,000 tonnes.
★ However, India’s walnut production has remained stagnant at around 30,000 tonnes for the past 30–35 years, whereas during the same period, China’s production has surged from 30,000 tonnes to 12 lakh tonnes.
