News Capsule: Import pressure weighs on urad, but signs of recovery ahead
★ The urad (black matpe) market is currently under pressure due to heavy imports and rising domestic arrivals. Increasing port stocks have ensured ample availability in the market, leading to softness in prices.
★ During the April–January period, urad imports have reached around 895,000 tonnes, significantly higher than 668,000 tonnes during the same period last year. This figure is already close to the previous full financial year’s total imports of 820,000 tonnes, and imports may touch a new high in the current fiscal.
★ Large import volumes and continued arrivals in mandis have kept the market sentiment weak for now. However, domestic production is estimated to be lower this year, which prompted higher imports.
★ In Myanmar, farmers are reportedly shifting acreage from urad to mung, which could reduce export availability in the coming months. Fresh arrivals from African origins are expected only after August.
★ The current weakness may be temporary. As domestic arrivals begin to decline and the pace of imports slows, the market is likely to regain balance from May onwards. Lower production and limited forward supply could gradually support prices.
★ Overall, while the market remains under pressure at present, conditions are expected to improve in the coming months with a gradual recovery in prices.
