News Capsule: India’s Desi Chana Imports Decline, Prices Likely to Strengthen
★ India’s desi chana (chickpea) imports are declining significantly this year. During April–October 2025, the country is expected to import only 100,000 tonnes of chana, compared with 151,000 tonnes in the same period last year.
★ In the previous financial year, out of the total 1.506 million tonnes imported, 1.3 million tonnes arrived between December and March alone, when Australia shipped large volumes. However, the situation is completely different this year.
★ Australia is estimated to produce a record 2.5 million tonnes of chana this season, yet bulk exports remain quite limited. Australian traders fear that India may impose an import duty on chana, prompting them to export cautiously.
★ By November 30, Australia’s total chickpea exports are estimated at 350,000 tonnes—of which 100,000 tonnes may go to Pakistan, 50,000 tonnes to Bangladesh (due to Ramadan demand), and only about 200,000 tonnes to India.
★ Large bulk shipments, as seen last year, are not visible this season.
★ After Ramadan demand is met, India is expected to remain the largest and most dominant buyer of Australian chana, as other markets are limited. Considering India’s consumption levels and record domestic production, imports are likely to continue on a regular but lower scale—not in huge quantities like last year.
★ According to I-Grain India, lower imports, reduced bulk shipments from Australia, and steadily rising domestic demand in India may support and strengthen chana prices in the coming months.
