News Capsule: Karnataka — Government Concerned Over Falling Maize Prices
★ Maize prices have fallen sharply in Karnataka, causing distress among farmers, especially in North Karnataka, where protests are ongoing demanding procurement at MSP. In response, the State government has assured full support to the farmers.
★ The Chief Minister said that major distilleries in the State will be called upon to immediately procure maize for ethanol production. Discussions will also be held with the poultry industry, which has a high demand for maize, to increase their purchases.
★ He added that since domestic production is sufficient, the State will write to the Central Government seeking restrictions on the import of 7 million tonnes of maize to help stabilize market prices.
