News Capsule: Kazakhstan’s pulse production surges, emerging as a growing threat to Australia and Canada
★ Farmers in Kazakhstan are rapidly expanding the cultivation of pulse crops, particularly lentils and peas. Higher profitability compared to cereals and stable export demand have significantly boosted farmers’ interest in pulses.
★ Lentil production in 2025 is expected to reach 800,000 tonnes, which is 75% higher than in 2024. Pea production is estimated at around 155,000 tonnes, about 5% higher than last year.
★ Lentil exports in the current year are forecast at 500,000 tonnes, with Türkiye remaining the largest buyer. Pea exports are expected to reach 106,000 tonnes, with China, Afghanistan and Uzbekistan as the major destinations.
★ Given Kazakhstan’s rapidly expanding production and aggressive export strategy, it is increasingly becoming a direct competitive threat to Australia and Canada in the global lentil export market.
