News Capsule: Kharif 2025: Sharp Increase in Maize Production Estimate
★ According to the first advance estimates released by the Ministry of Agriculture for Kharif 2025–26, maize production is expected to rise significantly. Compared to last year, maize output is projected to show a strong upward surge.
Maize Production (in lakh tonnes):
2024–25: 248.08
2025–26 first estimate: 283.03
Change: +34.95 lakh tonnes
★ This increase in maize production is attributed to better rainfall, expansion in sown area and favourable weather conditions. Looking at the past five years, maize production has shown a steady upward trend—from 215.55 lakh tonnes in 2020–21 to an expected 283.03 lakh tonnes in 2025–26.
★ The rise in demand for ethanol has also contributed to the increase in maize cultivation and production.
★ Overall, maize has emerged as the strongest performing crop among major grains in Kharif 2025.
