★ Australian desi chana exports remain strong, with a slight improvement in India’s buying interest: Jaijeev Saraff, Mandla Trading, Australia
★ Australia’s desi chana exports are estimated at around 400,000–450,000 tonnes so far this season, shipped through both bulk vessels and containers.
★ Bangladesh is expected to receive around 100,000 tonnes, including two bulk vessels and roughly 20,000 tonnes of container cargo. Pakistan has received about 80,000–90,000 tonnes through two vessels. India has purchased nearly 200,000 tonnes, while other destinations have taken around 50,000 tonnes.
★ India’s buying interest has shown some recent improvement, although it still remains lower compared to last year. Bulk shipment planning is also significantly weaker than the previous season, indicating cautious sentiment in the market. Export pace has slowed due to delays in harvesting, and weak destination prices have limited farmer selling.
★ The Australian industry is closely monitoring India’s policy stance, especially the potential decision regarding an import duty on chana. If no duty is imposed, 2–3 bulk vessels could be shipped to India in the coming weeks. For December, around 30,000 tonnes each are expected to arrive at Indian ports in the first and second week.
★ Overall, India’s demand is likely to remain steady throughout the year, although it will depend largely on policy developments. For November, total Australian chana exports are estimated to be around 100,000 tonnes.
