News Capsule: Lentil Situation in Canada and the United States
Canada
★ For 2025-26, Canada’s lentil production is projected to rise by about 22% to 3.0 million tonnes. Red lentil output has declined to around 1.6 million tonnes, but large green lentil production has doubled to 0.9 million tonnes. Production of other lentil types has also increased to about 0.56 million tonnes.
★ With higher carry-in stocks and increased production, total supply is expected to jump 32% to 3.6 million tonnes. Exports may rise to 2.1 million tonnes, with India, the European Union, and the United States remaining the top buyers.
★ Due to abundant supply, ending stocks are forecast to reach a record 1.15 million tonnes. Higher availability is likely to push average prices down by nearly 33%, to around USD 530 per tonne. This season, green lentils are trading at a premium of about USD 100 per tonne over red lentils, compared with a USD 465 premium last year.
