★ The pea market saw little change last week. Exporters are currently focused on fulfilling their outstanding export contracts and on the easing of selling pressure from the northern hemisphere harvest.
★ China has stated that it is willing to eliminate its tariffs on Canadian agricultural products if Canada removes the 100% tariff on Chinese electric vehicles and the 25% tariff on Chinese steel and aluminum.
★ Canada’s opposition party, however, has indicated that it would rather provide subsidies to farmers than support this proposal.
★ This development is significant for India — if both countries reach an agreement, it could push up international pea prices.
★ If no action is taken, peas may be exported from India at lower prices.
★ To ensure domestic pulses farmers receive adequate prices, imposing import tariffs is necessary.
