News Capsule: Possible Consideration on Increasing Sugar MSP and Ethanol Prices
★ Before increasing the MSP, the government wants to assess what support the mills receive after allowing the export of 1.5 million tonnes of sugar.
★ ISMA recently demanded that the sugar MSP be raised to ₹40 per kg, and NFCSF has also submitted a request to increase the MSP.
★ Sugar MSP was last increased in 2019 to ₹31 per kg, and no change has been made since then, whereas the FRP for sugarcane has been raised continuously.
★ In 2019–20, the sugarcane FRP was ₹275, which has now been raised to ₹355, but the MSP has not been revised.
★ ISMA stated that in December, ethanol produced from sugarcane juice is priced at ₹65.61 per litre, from B-molasses at ₹60.73 per litre, and from C-molasses at ₹57.97 per litre, whereas ethanol made from maize is priced at ₹71.86 per litre and from FCI rice at ₹58.5 per litre.
