News Capsule: Pulses imports may be extended under MoUs: sources
★ The government may extend existing memorandums of understanding (MoUs) for duty-free imports of pulses from Myanmar, Mozambique and Malawi for another five years starting April 2026, sources said.
★ Currently, imports of tur (arhar), urad and yellow peas are allowed duty free until March 2026. The move comes amid improved crop prospects, a 14.5% year-on-year increase in rabi sowing, and the availability of around 2 million tonnes of buffer stock with the government.
★ Officials from the Department of Consumer Affairs said weather conditions are favourable and supply remains comfortable due to adequate private stocks and imports. Rabi sowing of pulses such as gram, masoor and urad has increased to 13.4 million hectares this season.
★ Pulses inflation has remained in the negative zone since February 2025, with prices declining 15.86% in November 2025.
Clarity on the extension of MoUs will emerge only after the official circular is issued.
