News Capsule: Rice: Prices Under Pressure Due to Record Production and Record Stocks
★ In the first advance estimate for the 2025–26 Kharif season, the Agriculture Department projected rice production at 173.3 million tonnes, compared with 169.5 million tonnes last year.
★ Record stocks of rice are also available in the central pool, while export demand remains normal.
★ Due to these factors, rice prices have been declining for the past three years.
★ To reduce the large inventory, the government has even approved the use of rice for ethanol production.
★ Ethanol manufacturers are lifting good quantities, but given the huge stocks, rice prices may continue to remain under pressure.
