News Capsule: Sugar export to be reviewed after March
★ The Department of Food & Public Distribution will review the utilisation of the sugar export quota for the 2025–26 season after the end of March. Sugar mills that do not intend to export can surrender their allocated quota by March 31, following which the unutilised quantity will be redistributed to mills with better export performance or those willing to ship additional volumes.
★ Mills will be allowed to exchange export quota with domestic quota, either partially or fully, only up to March 31, 2026. No such exchanges will be permitted beyond this date. On November 14, the government had allocated a 1.5 million tonne export quota based on the average sugar production of mills over the last three seasons.
★ According to the Indian Sugar & Bio-Energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA), sugar production rose nearly 25% year-on-year to 11.9 million tonnes by the end of December. For the full 2025–26 season, total sugar output is estimated at around 34.3 million tonnes.
★ With Brazil’s new sugar season starting from April, export momentum from India is expected to improve during January–March.
